CONCEPT IMAGES EVOKED BY MULTIPLE REPRESENTATIONS OF FUNCTIONS
HATİCE AKKOÇThis
study
investigates
students'
concept
images
evoked
from
multiple
representations
offunctions
such
as
set
correspondence
diagrams,
sets
of
ordered
pairs,
graphs
and
algebraic
expressions.
The
concept
images
evoked
from
multiple
representations
are
examined
in
terms
of
the
roles
representations
play;
as
prototypes
and
exemplars.
The
sample
of
the
study
is
9
students
in
grade
11.
These
9
students
were
selected
among
114
grade
11
students
on
the
basis
ofthe
results
from
the
ques-
tionnaires
using
theoretical
sampling.
This
study
is
mainly
qualitative
and
the
main
data
is
obtained
from
the
semi-structured
interviews
with
the
9
students.
In
these
interviews,
students
were
asked
to
decide
whether
the
given
representations
are
func-
tions
or
not.
The
analysis
of
the
interview
protocols
indicated
that
the
set
correspondence
diagram
played
the
role
of
a
prototy-
pe
and
evoked
concept
images
which
included
the
defıning
properties
of
function.
On
the
other
hand,
graphical
and
algebraic
representations
evoked
exemplar-based
concept
images
rather
than
the
defınition
Keywords: Function concept, concept image, multiple representations, prototype, exemplar.

STORYLlNES AND CHEMISTRY TEACHING
Arş. Gör. Hülya DEMİRCİOĞLU, Yrd. Doç. Dr. Gökhan DEMİRCİOĞLU & Prof. Dr. Alipaşa AYASRecently,
most

have
emphasized
students'

For
this
reason,
it
should
be
taken
into
consideration
students'

The

In

main

Recently
Hacettepe

important
steps
in

As
a
result
of
these

has

top

among

and
has
received
a
good
reputation
among

Improving

is

criteria
in

a
higher
education
institution.
In
order
for
a
university
to
be
in
a
higher
position
as
a
whole.
it
needs
to
improve
its
teaching
as
well.
Improving
teaching
potential
requires
that
at
least
the
following
efforts
have
been
taken
into
considerati-
on:
Improving
faculty
members'
teaching
skills,
improving

improving

On
the

and
usage
of
a
credit
system
(the
European

are
seen
as
the
main
tools
for
transparency.
During
the
preparation
of
DS
and
ECTS
at
Hacettepe
University,
it
was
realized
that
most
of
our
teaching
programs
are
teacher-centered
as
opposed
to
being
student-centered.
In
addition,
a
number
of
departments
had
problems
with
having
their
curriculum
to
become
parallel
with
ECTS.
In
order
to
complete
this
process,
a
new
framework
is
needed.
Thus,
it
is
important
that
necessary

at

THE MEANING OF THE CONCEPT VARIABLE THAT STUDENTS GA VE FOR AND THE ERRORS THEY MADE
Yrd. Doç. Dr. Yasin SOYLULeaning

the

to
comprehend
more
elaborately
the
subjects

One
of
these

is
variable
concept.
In
spite
of
this,
the
concept
of
variable
is
generally
considered
as
being
abstract,
irrelevance

by
the
students
and
this
causes
to
a
negative
attitude
in
response
to
this
concept
and
generally
a
failure
among
them.
One
of
the
most
important
reason
of
this
problem
is
originated
from
different
usage
of

Because,
the

AN ANAL YSIS OF THE SELF -EFFICACY BELIEFS ABOUT COMPUTERS OF THE BIOLOGY STUDENT TEACHERS IN HACETTEPE UNIVERSITY
Yrd.Doç.Dr. Miraç YILMAZ, Arş.Gör. Cem GERÇEK, Öğr.Gör. Pınar KÖSEOĞLU & Prof.Dr. Haluk SORANThe aim of the study is to identify the self-efficacy beliefs related to computers of the biology student teachers in Hacettepe Universityand to find whether certain variables have impact on their self-efficacy belief. The data were collec- ted by the use of survey questionnaire and the scale of self-efficacy perception about computers (Aşkar & Umay, 2001). For the variables, the arithmetical mean and standard deviation were cakulated. ANOV A and t test were employed to identify any difference amoung variables. The data indicate that the self-efficacy levels of the student teachers are low (2,36) and that the variables analysed do not have any significant effects on the self-efficacy levels.
