SELF-REPORTED NEEDS OF EFL STUDENTS IN TERMS OF LINGUISTIC SKILLS
Assist. Prof. Dr. Mehmet ÇELİK This study investigates the need 1evels of
students regarding linguistic skills studying at the English
Langauge Department at Hacettepe University. The skills
that are investigated are grammar, vocabulary, listening,
speaking. pronunciation, writing, and reading. A study of
the needs in these skills areas becomes important and
meaningful given the new curriculum designed by the
Higher Education CounciL, which drastically reduces the
amount of time spared earlier for the teaching of these
skills. The study identifies areas of reduction in the
syllabus, and examines data obtained from students
through a questionnaire drawing conclusions by comparing
what the new curriculum promises and what students need.
What the new curriculum appears to have done is that it has
greatly reduced the time allocated for the learning of
linguistic skills which students need most such as speaking,
pronunciation, listening and vocabulary.

A STUDY ON THE PRESCHOOL CHILDREN'S SELF-HELP SKILLS ACCORDING TO THEIR MOTHER'S WORKING STATUS
Yrd. Doç.Dr. Serap DEMİRİZ & Doç. Dr.Çağlayan DİNÇERThis research has been done to examine
pre-school children's self-help skills according to mother's
working status. The sampling of the research was done
randomly from 514 mothers, 298 of them working, 2]6 of
them non working of middle sodo economic ]eve] in Ankara
in Turkey who has 5-6 years old children. Data was
gathered from the questionnaire developed by researchers
by using self-help related parts of " The Test of Seattle",
"Portage Check List", and "Denver II Developmental Screening
Test" which was tested before being used by the
mothers. In the findings of the research, it has been found
that there is a meaningfu] statistical difference between
mother's working status and children's behaviours to gain
self-help skill levels such as eating, (un)dressing, cleanliness,
toilet, tidiness, avoiding danger. Through the se findings,
it was found that self-help total score of working
mothers' children was higher than the total score of the
children of non working mothers.

PERSONAL AND ORGANIZATIONAL VISIONS OF THE DEANS IN TURKISH UNIVERSITIES FOR THE NEW MILLENNIUM
Ş.Şule ERÇETİN & Doç.Dr. A.Gülsün BASKANVision is an important dimension in
leadership characteristics of university administrators for
the leamer-centered university of the 21st century. This
important dimension expresses a two-phased process, the
development of personal and orJ!;anizationalvisions. Our
knowledJ!;e about the extent of university administrator's
vision at present is insuffident. in this study, the personal
and orJ!;anizational phases of the vision development
process was performed. The data were collected from 449
deans in Turkish universities. The evaluations of the deans
about their proficiencies, self-development field s,
leadership styles, professional values and faculties were
determined. The evaluations of the deans about the
strenJ!;ths, weaknesses, climate and the faculties in their
ideals were also determined. The orJ!;anizationalvisions of
the deans are consistent with their own personal visions.
Therefore, the developed visions for the faculties of the
future are elear and liJ!;ht.The deans with visions have a
very important potential to sustain the leamer-centered
universities of the 21st century.

By

mainly
two
suggestions
arise
for
the
usage
of
generic

Firstly,
the
sequence
of

exemplification
may
be
in
the
order
of
all
the
generic

first
and
then
the

Secondly,
while

the

be
taken
into

besides
the
parallel

was
to
find
out
how
pre-service

on
the
characteristics
of
good

In
order
to
obtain
this
information,
29
pre-service

and
29
in-service

were
given
a
questionnaire
about
good

The
questionnaire
has
50
questions
and
established
over
six
categories
that
are
teachers'
classroom
behavior
and
relationships,
teaching
and
other
experiences,
school

and
bilingualism.
For
analyzing
the
data,
mean

each
category
were
used.
The
results
indicated
that
in-service

about
all
categories
except
