PERCEPTIONS OF TEACHERS ABOUT THE CHARACTERISTICS OF COMPUTERS IN THE DIFFUSION PROCESS OF TECHNOLOGY
Prof. Dr. Petek AŞKAR & Yrd. Doç. Dr. Yasemin Koçak USLUELn this study, teacher's perceptions related
lo the attributes of computers as an innovation were investigated.
Twenty seven teachers from three primary schools
were interviewed. it was observed that there are two
different diffusion processes: Computer as an instructional
1001 and computer as a management tool and personal usage.
As a management and personal usage, teachers found
computers advantageous, compatible, triable and observable.
However, as an instructional 1001, most teachers couldn't
see its advantageous and have doubt in using it.

INVESTIGATION OF PROSPECTIVE MATHEMATICS TEACHERS' PROBABILITV ACHIEVEMENT, ATTITUDES TOWARD PROBABILITV AND MATHEMATICS WITH RESPECT TO GENDER
Doç. Dr. Safure BULUT, İ. Elif YETKİN & Sibel KAZAKThe purpose of the present study was to investigate
probability aehievement, attitudes toward probability
and mathematies of senior prospeetive mathematies
teaehers enrolled in Secondary Mathematies Teaeher Edueation
Programs. In order to test the hypotheses, MannWhitney
U Test or Pearson eorrelation were used. Af ter the
analyses, while it was found that there was a statistically
signifieant mean differenee on probability achievement in
the favor of male prospeetive mathematies teaehcrs, it was
found that there was a signifieant mean differenee on attitudes
toward mathematies in the favor of girls. It was found
no signifieant mean differenee on attitudes toward probability
with respeet to gender. Therc were no signifieant
relationships among girls' probability aehievement, attitudes
toward probability and mathematics. Wbile it was found
significant relationships between boys' probability aehievement
and their attitudes toward probability, and between
their attitudes toward probability and mathematics, it
was found no significant relationship between boy s '
probability
achievement and their attitudes toward mathematics.
When the prospeetive teaehers beeome a teaeher, wrong
impressions toward their stııdents are prcvented so that
they can make positive contribution toward their female
students' achievement in probability, and attitudes towards
probability and mathematies.

FOUR-SIX AGED PRESCHOOL CHILDREN'S PERCEPTION OF THEMSELVES THEIR TEACHERS AND PARENTS WITH EMOTIONAL FACIAL EXPRESSIONS
Eylem ÇELİK , Belma TUGRUL & S.Songül YALÇINlıİs research is a cross-sectional research
aiming to determine how four-six years old children pereieve
themselves, their parents and teachers In this research,
it is tried to determine whether the children's perception of
themselves. 96 children attended this research. To determine
the chil dren' s perceptions of themselves, their parents
and teachers picture cards on which there are happy, sad,
angry and suprised faeial expressions were used, developed
by Cüceloğlu 1968, in addition to them "seared" facial expressions
were used. Each child was studied individually.
The children were asked to match the facial expressions
with themselves, their mothers, fathers and teachers. This research was a 8 time repeated, 8 month lasted research.
It was observed that children mostly prefered happy
faeial expression to define themselves, their parents and teachers.
It was also determined that there was a consisteney
between the faeial expressions that they chose for themselves
and for their teachers and parents. Gender played an
important role for children when pereieving themselves
and their parents, whereas, it has no impact on the pereeption
of their teachers. As the children's age grew, an incrcase
in the amount of positive "happy" pereeption was observed. The literacy of the parents only effected the child perception about themselves.

HE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LEFT-HANDEDNESS AND APTITUDE IN GEOMETRY
Yrd. Doç. Dr. Nezahat ÇETİN, Yrd. Doç. Dr. Nevin MAHİR & Doç. Dr. Şükrü TORUNThe present studyaimed at investigating if
there is a difference between left-handed and right-handed
people in the pereeption time of numbers represented by
geometric shapes. The findings of the study indicated that
the left-handed pereeived the number of corners in regular
polygon in a shorter time compared with the right-handed.
This differenee reveals that the left-handed shows an
aptitude in geometry.

DIE BEDEUTUNG UND FUNKTION DES UBERSETZENS IN DER DEUTSCHDIDAKTIK
Yrd. Doç. Dr. Bengül ÇETİNTAŞAs it is known, the basic aim of the
translation courses is to contribute to the acquistion and the
improvement of foreign languages. However, when the
characteristics and needs of the leamers, who are supposed
to reach this aim are taken into consideration, it is much
better to keep the mother tongue-target language
interrelations in mind rather than starting off from the
mother tongue. Therefore, a contrastiye analysis, which
focuses on the grammar of not only the target language but
also the mother tongue proves necessary.
in this study, it has been concluded that a translation
course on subordinate elauses and which is based on a
contrastiye grammar approach encourages cognitive
learning, provides ease of leaming and prevents translation
mistakes.

PERCEPTION TIME OF DECIMAL NUMBERS REPRESENTED DIFFERENT SHAPES
Yrd. Doç. Dr. Nevin MAHİR & Yrd. Doç. Dr. Nezahat ÇETİNin this work, we investigated whether there
is a significant difference in perception time of the numbers
of the decimal number and the largest of them when they
are represented in graphical form and tabular form. The
computer experiments performed on two groups of students
in different ages. The experiment results show that
perception time of the numbers of the decimal numbers and
their largest values are shorter at representation of them in
graphical form. As a result, it is important to represent the
decimal numbers in the graphical form.

Öğr. Gör. Mustafa Kemal ÖZTÜRKn educational and instructional processes,
visual sense has great effect on leaming. Therefore, addition
to the examination of the geographical phenemenons in
the field, use of different educational materials is a must for
the effective geography education.
in this study, it is investigated that what kind of educational
materials have been used in geography courses in
high schools. Usage frequency of these materials in the courses
are also questioned. According to the results, phsical
maps are used by the half of the participants. However, other
materials are not used sufficiently.
Using the technology, devices and materials provides
effective geography education. In addition to this, these
materials should be kept in the accesable area, for the students.
The best way to do this is establishing separate geography
classes of the schools.

ON AESTHETICS OF MATHEMATICS
Yrd. Doç. Dr. Cahit PESENMathematics is a study of patterns and relationsbips
[I]. Mathematics is regarded as an unlovable
and a very hard subject to be understood by a lot of people.
As Mathematics is being a way of thinking the aim of
mathematics teachers shouldn't be to 1000 knowledge to the
students but to contribute to intellect developing. Besides
they should strive to direct the students to develop positive
manners for mathematics.
The purpose of this paper is to contribute the struggle
of .;aining "the ability of positive manner for mathematics"
anr of "the developing aesthetic feeling." which is considered
as a one of the general target of mathematics. in this article
we tried to fınd out how a teaching method should be foIlowed so as to explore aesthetic way of mathematics.

KNOWLEDGE OF THE SECONDARY SCHOOL AND UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ON THE ENVIRONMENT, ENVIRONMENTAL CONCEPTS AND PROBLEMS AND SUGGESTIONS
Doç. Dr. Ayhan YILMAZ, Prof. Dr. İnci MORGİL, Pınar AKTUĞ & Öğrt. İsmail GÖBEKLİSince environmental education has an interdisciplinary
nature, it should be provided to the students
at all educational levels. Knowledge of environmental
facts, their contribution to environmental problems and also
of the steps to be followed to save the nature requires the
studies regarding the current knowledge of the students on
the environment. in order to detennine the knowledge levels
of the students three different questionnaires were administered
to three different student groups at different time
periods. During the 1998-99 school year 240 students
attending to Hacettepe University, Education Faculty, Chemistry
Education Branch; during the 2000-2001 school year
228 middle school students and during the same school
year 153 students attending to Hacettepe University Education
Faculty Chemistry Education Branch. Af ter the evaluation,
the obtained results indicated that the eııvironmentaJ
education is not sufficient, those students who took chemistry
course at the secondary level have more knowledge
and they have been informed abaııt environmental issııes
from the media.
