Investigation of the Anxiety Level of Senior Students of the Statistics Department of the Faculty of Science in Ankara Research Universities
Beste Buse YILDIRIM & Mehmet YILMAZThe university period, in which people realize, evaluate and develop themselves, is extremely important. In this process, job and future uncertainty, expectations and negative influences, especially in the last year, can cause anxiety in people. This situation also affects the learning process of individuals. The aim of this study is to determine the severity of the anxiety levels in terms of various variables of the senior statistics department students. The research covers the senior students of the statistics department of the Science Faculty at Ankara research universities in the 2020-2021 academic year. Based on Ankara, Gazi, Hacettepe and Middle East Technical Universities, the sample size of the sample to be selected was determined in equal shares and 93 samples were obtained, under the assumption that the senior students of the Statistics Department of each university had equal anxiety. "Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory” and “Beck Hopelessness Scale” were applied to the research group. The obtained data were analyzed with SPSS 28 statistical program. It has been observed that the anxiety and hopelessness levels of senior statistics department students are affected by the effects of COVID-19 on future plans, monthly income, weighted grade point average at the university, age, advantages outside the university, and work experience variables, and are not affected by the gender, marital status, number of siblings, graduated high school type, university studied, reason for choosing statistics department, pre-university settlement, parent education status, job priority, future job prospect, current job prospects, current working status, the idea of finding a suitable job time in accordance with the received education, the most appropriate strategy in case of the not employed within one year, self-development in the COVID-19 pandemic variables. As a result, it is considered that the senior students anxiety and hopelessness should be reduced, in order to improve themselves better and more effectively providing psychological counseling and guidance services and by increasing training seminars in this direction in the education process, necessary to support them in order to cope with anxiety and hopelessness.

Acculturative Stress and Scholarship Liability: Exploring the Challenges Faced by Turkish Graduate Students at US Universities
Hüseyin TUTARThis qualitative research aimed to explore the challenges that create acculturative stress on Turkish graduate scholarship students at U.S. universities. This study used the theoretical framework of Berr's (2006) Acculturative Stress Model. As the experience of being a student in the U.S. is socially and contextually constructed through the students' shared experiences, the phenomenological research method is used in this study to obtain in-depth knowledge about the phenomenon. For the data collection, 13 participants were interviewed as a representative sample. The interviews were transcribed, and the common challenges that create acculturative stress for the students were determined. Five salient themes emerged in this study: language incompetency, loss of self-confidence, scholarship liability, loneliness, and academic advisors. Also, time restriction and students' perception of America are determined as essential subthemes. Implications for the scholarship program authorities, students, advisors, and counselors are discussed.

Exploring the Relationship between Socioeconomic Status and Identification of Gifted in Turkey through Critical Systems Thinking
Mehmet BIÇAKÇIThis correlational study examines the relationship between identification as gifted and various indicators of socioeconomic status (SES) among high school students living in Turkey. The relatively large and representative sample consists of 688 high school students, both identified (n = 343) and unidentified (n = 345) as gifted, enrolled in nationwide after-school gifted education programs. The “identified” group comprises adolescents who scored an IQ index of 130 or higher, while the unidentified group comprises high school students attending formal educational institutions without meeting the IQ-based identification criterion. Chi-square tests of independence were utilized to investigate the relationship between identification status and SES indicators such as perceived household income, parental education level, current area of residence, and area of residence where most of life is spent. The results indicate that identified participants are more likely to come from families with higher perceived income and parental education levels, live in urban areas, and spend most of their lives in urban areas compared to the unidentified group. Overall, the findings suggest that SES factors might play a significant role in the identification of giftedness students in Turkey. The findings are discussed around the problem of underrepresentation in traditional identification methods, with a focus on educational equality within the framework of systems theory and critical systems theory.

Examination of Explicit Engineering emphasis on Students’ Knowledge and Views of Engineering through STEM Training
Sevgi AYDIN GÜNBATAR & Özal ŞAPKAN The goal of this mixed-method design study was to compare and contrast the contribution of STEM education on 6th-grade students’ (n=62) knowledge and perceptions of engineering and engineers. The data were collected by the use of the Engineering Knowledge Measurement Scale (EKMS) and the Draw an Engineer (DAE) instrument. In the study, two groups, namely, STEM-explicit emphasis on engineering (STEM-EE) and STEM-only (STEM-O), were formed. The data were collected before and after the 16 class hours of training (i.e., for a month) and were then analyzed. In both groups, two STEM activities (thermos and insulated home design) were carried out. However, the explicit emphasis on engineering was made in STEM-EE group. On the contrary, STEM-O group conducted the same STEM activities with no engineering emphasis. The results revealed that the students in both groups had incomplete and inaccurate knowledge and views of engineering (e.g. considering engineers to be workers) before the study. After the training, the students in the STEM-EE group had more accurate and richer views of engineering. Moreover, the students in the STEM-EE group mentioned more different fields of engineering after the study when compared with their peers in the STEM-O group. The explicit emphasis on engineering in STEM implementation using different models should be integrated into STEM activities.
