ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ DECISIONS IN CHOOSING AN ARITHMETIC OPERATION FOR STANDARD WORD PROBLEMS

ÖZET
Bu çal›flman›n amac› anahtar sözcük içeren ve içermeyen standart sözel problemlerde ö¤rencilerin ifllemi neye göre seçtiklerini ortaya ç›karmakt›r. Bu amaçla Bolu ilinde sosyo-ekonomik düzeyi orta-düflük bir ilkö¤retim okulundan 3, 4 ve 5. s›n›flardan toplam 9 ö¤renci ile klinik görüflmeler yap›lm›flt›r. Veriler analiz edildi¤inde ö¤rencilerin genellikle problem çözme sürecinde anahtar sözcükleri kullanmaya çal›flt›klar› görülmüfltür. Bulgular›n ilkö¤retimde matematik e¤itimi aç›s›ndan do¤urgular› tart›fl›lmaktad›r.


ABSTRACT
The purpose of this research was to investigate elementary school students’ successes in choosing the correct arithmetic operation for different types of standard word problems. Clinical interviews were conducted with 3rd, 4th and 5th grades of an elementary school located in a mid-low socioeconomic area in Bolu. Data were analyzed using qualitative methods. Results showed that students generally used key words when they were solving word problems. Implications for mathematics education at the elementary level were discussed.
