EVALUATION OF GENETICS SUBJECTS AT BIOLOGY PROGRAM IN SECONDARY EDUCATION AND DETERMINATION OF THE STUDENTS’ INTEREST TO GENETICS

ÖZET
Bu çal›şman›n amac›, genetik konular›n›n orta öğretim program ve ders kitaplar›nda ne ölçüde yer ald›ğ›- n› ortaya ç›karmak; lise öğrencilerinin genetik konular›na olan ilgileri ile akademik başar›lar› aras›nda bir ilişki olup olmad›ğ›n› belirlemektir. Bu amaca yönelik olarak orta öğretim kurumlar›nda genetik ders kitaplar› ve ders programlar› incelenmiştir. Öğrencilerin genetik konular›ndaki başar› durumlar›n› be- lirlemek için bir başar› testi; genetiğe olan ilgilerini tespit etmek için de bir ilgi ölçeği haz›rlanm›şt›r. Haz›rlanan araçlar, 2001-2002 eğitim-öğretim y›l› bahar döneminde, Ankara’daki orta öğretim kurumlar›nda öğrenim gören 160 lise son s›n›f, fen bölümü öğrencisine uygulanm›şt›r. Araşt›rmada, okutulan Lise 3 Biyoloji ders kitab›nda- ki genetik konular›n›n, “Genetik Bilgi Taş›yan Moleküller, Kal›t›m, Populasyon Genetiği, Biyoteknoloji ve Genetik Mühendisliği” başl›klar› alt›nda yer ald›klar›, Lise 1 ve Li- se 2 Biyoloji ders kitaplar›nda ise “Genetik” başl›ğ› alt›nda bir konunun bulunmad›ğ›, ancak Lise 1 ders kitab›nda, ge- netik bilgileri içeren konular›n yer ald›ğ› belirlenmiştir. Yap›lan istatistiksel analizler sonucunda, yüksek ilgi düzeyine sahip öğrencilerin genetik testi ortalamas›n›n, or- ta ve düşük ilgi düzeyindeki öğrencilerin genetik testi orta- lamas›ndan daha yüksek olduğu gözlenmiştir. Orta ilgi dü- zeyi grubu ile düşük ilgi düzeyindeki grup aras›nda ise an- laml› bir fark gözlenmemiştir.

ABSTRACT
The aim of this research was to find out the occurrence level of genetics subjects in the secondary school curriculum and course books. Investigating the inte- rest of Lycee students in genetics subjects and the relation to the academic success of them was also another aim. To determine the occurrence level of the genetics sub- jects in secondary education institutes, course materials and course curriculum were examined. To determine the suc- cess level of the students in genetics subjects, an achieve- ment test, a questionnaire form were prepared. Prepared materials were applied to 160 last year students who were being educated in secondary education institutions, natural science section, in Ankara during the 2001-2002 academic year, spring semester. In this research, it was observed that the genetics sub- jects of the Biology, course book instructed in the Lycee 3 rd class, were grouped into “Molecules carrying genetics information”, Inheritance, Population Genetics, Biotechno- logy and Genetics Engineering topics. It was also observed that, there was no chapter under the topic “Genetics” n the Lycee 1 and Lycee 2 Biology course books but there were chapters containing Genetics related information. As a result of statistical analysis, it was observed that the mean of the genetics test of highly interested students was higher than the mean of the genetics test of medium and lower interested students. No meaningful difference was observed between the group of students with medium interest and the group of students with low interest.
