TEACHER EXPECTATIONS FOR A MORE EFFICIENT BIOLOGY INSTRUCTION

ÖZET
Bu çalısmada orta ögretim kurumlarında daha etkili bir biyoloji ögretimi için biyoloji ögretmenlerinin beklentilerinin neler oldugunun belirlenmesi amaçlanmıstır. Ögretmenlerin biyoloji ögretim programına, meslektaslarına, okul yöneticilerine, hizmet öncesi ve hizmet içi egitime ve ders kitaplarına iliskin görüs ve beklentilerinin belirlenmesi amacıyla bir anket hazırlanmıs ve 14 ilde görevli 369 biyoloji ögretmenine uygulanmıstır. Degerlendirmeler sonucu ögretmenlerin biyoloji ögretim programının hedef ve içerik yönünden gözden geçirilerek güncellestirilmesini ve ders saatlerinin yeniden düzenlenmesini istedikleri tespit edilmistir. Programın uygulanısında karsılasılan problemler içinde okulun fiziki kosullarının yetersizliginin ön sırada yer aldıgı, bunu ögrencilerin ilkögretimden yetersiz bilgiye sahip olarak gelmelerinin, ögrencilerin biyoloji dersine karsı olumsuz tutumlarının ve ögrenci seçme sınavının olumsuz etkisinin izledigi saptanmıstır. Ögretmenlerin okul yöneticilerinden okulun fiziki sartlarını iyilestirmelerini, zümre toplantılarına katılmalarını ve alınan kararların uygulanısını denetlemelerini istedikleri, biyoloji ve egitim ögretim alanı dısında bilgisayar ve yabancı dile iliskin hizmet içi egitime ihtiyaç duydukları ve ders kitaplarının içerik, islenis özellikleri ve ögretime yardımcı unsurlar açısında tekrar gözden geçirilmesini istedikleri tespit edilmistir.

ABSTRACT
The aim of this study is to determine the expectations of biology teachers for a more efficient biology instruction. In order to reach this goal, a questionnaire was prepared to understand the opinion of biology teachers regarding the education program, their colleagues and school directors, teacher training services, in-service trainings, and textbooks. This questionnaire was applied to 369 biology teachers from 14 different cities of Turkey. The findings indicated that teachers expected that curriculum of biology education is to be updated and class hours are to be rearranged. The findings also indicated that the poor physical conditions of schools, insufficient background knowledge of students, negative attitudes of students, and negative effects of university entrance exams are among the problems in implementing the curriculum. In general, it is observed that biology teachers have good relations with each other and with school administration; they need inservice training regarding biology education, education in general, computers and foreign language; and they believe that textbooks should be scrutinized regarding their content and presentation.
