ABSTRACT
This study analyzes the dominance of Russian in Kazakhstan and the status of Kazakh in the context of native language and bilingualism. The continuation and status of a language is closely related to its transmission to younger generations. For this reason, researchers investigated the status of Kazakh among university students in the context of native language and bilingualism. In the study, researchers tried to determine the degree of use of Kazakh among the students of the Kazakh-American free university in Oskemen, Kazakhstan. The data were collected by applying the “Personal Information Form” and the “Questionnaire on Determining the Degree of Use of Kazakh as a Native Language among University Students” developed by the researchers. The questionnaires were applied to 313 first and second-year students studying in 20 different departments at the university. Researchers examined whether the degree of use of Kazakh as a native language among university students showed a significant difference according to the variables of “gender, age, year of study, and nationality”.
KEYWORDS: Kazakh and Russian languages, native language, language preference among students
